In 1740, the Iberian Peninsula was dominated by two major monarchies: the Kingdom of Spain under Philip V of Spain, and the independent Kingdom of Portugal ruled by John V of Portugal. Both kingdoms controlled extensive overseas empires, making Iberia a key center of global colonial power in the 18th century.
