In 1740, the Italian Peninsula remained politically fragmented among several states, including the Kingdom of Sardinia, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Papal States, and the Republic of Venice. Much of southern Italy formed the Kingdom of Naples, while the Duchy of Milan and other territories reflected strong influence from the Habsburg Monarchy.
