In 1630, the British Isles were ruled by Charles I over England, Scotland, and Ireland, maintaining a personal union of the three kingdoms. Tensions over taxation, royal authority, and religion-especially between the monarchy and Parliament, and between Anglican and Puritan factions-were intensifying. These pressures were building toward the conflicts that would soon erupt into the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
