In 1740, the Holy Roman Empire was a loose confederation of hundreds of duchies, bishoprics, free cities, and principalities under the nominal authority of the emperor, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor. Real political power was concentrated in major states such as the Habsburg Monarchy, the Kingdom of Prussia, and the Electorate of Bavaria, whose rivalries soon triggered the War of the Austrian Succession.
