In 1740, most of the Balkans was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, which governed the region through a system of provinces and local authorities. Only the northern fringes - such as parts of Croatia, Slavonia, and Transylvania - were controlled by the Habsburg Monarchy, following territorial gains from earlier Ottoman–Habsburg wars.
