Artist: Jan Matejko
Year: 1879–1882
This is a reproduction print of the famous historical painting “Prussian Homage” (Hołd pruski), created by Jan Matejko between 1879 and 1882. One of the most celebrated masterpieces of Polish historical painting, the artwork depicts the Prussian Homage of 10 April 1525, when Albert of Hohenzollern, Duke of Prussia, paid feudal homage to King Sigismund I the Old of Poland in Kraków. The original painting belongs to the collection of the Royal Wawel Castle and is displayed at the National Museum in Kraków, in the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art in the Sukiennice.
The monumental composition portrays Albert of Hohenzollern kneeling before King Sigismund I the Old in Kraków's Main Market Square, acknowledging the Polish monarch as his feudal overlord. The ceremony followed the secularization of the Teutonic Order's Prussian territories and the establishment of the Duchy of Prussia as a fief of the Polish Crown. Surrounded by members of the royal family, nobles, clergy and dignitaries, the central figures represent a defining moment in the history of Poland and Prussia.
Matejko's painting is particularly remarkable for its extraordinary historical detail, richly decorated Renaissance costumes and elaborate portrayal of the Polish royal court. The artist included numerous historical personalities, among them Queen Bona Sforza, the young Sigismund II Augustus and members of the Jagiellonian dynasty. The magnificent architecture of Kraków's Renaissance-era market square, ceremonial banners and intricate textiles emphasize the political power and cultural splendor of 16th-century Poland.
Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 388 × 785 cm. Completed in 1882, during the period when Poland was partitioned between neighboring powers, the painting became a powerful expression of Polish national identity and historical memory. Its monumental scale, detailed historical reconstruction and depiction of the relationship between Poland and Prussia make it one of the most significant works of 19th-century Polish historical art.
