Artist: Vasily Surikov
Year: 1899
This is a reproduction print of the monumental historical painting “The Russian Army's Crossing of the Alps” (Переход Суворова через Альпы в 1799 году), created by Russian historical painter Vasily Surikov in 1899. One of the most celebrated works of Russian military painting, the artwork depicts Russian soldiers crossing the Swiss Alps under the command of Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov in 1799, during the War of the Second Coalition against Revolutionary France. The original painting is housed at the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The dramatic composition portrays Russian soldiers descending a steep, snow-covered mountain slope, struggling to maintain their balance on the treacherous Alpine terrain. Armed with muskets and carrying their military equipment, the troops slide and scramble down the mountainside while their commander, Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov, encourages them from horseback. The scene captures the extraordinary physical challenges faced by the Russian army during its campaign through Switzerland, where difficult mountain passes, harsh weather and French military opposition tested the endurance of the soldiers.
Surikov's painting is particularly remarkable for its monumental vertical composition, dramatic mountain landscape and expressive portrayal of ordinary soldiers. The steep slope dominates the artwork, creating an overwhelming sense of height, danger and movement. Some soldiers appear determined and confident, while others show fear or uncertainty as they descend. By emphasizing their individual reactions, Surikov transforms the military expedition into a powerful study of courage, discipline and human endurance in extreme conditions.
Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 495 × 373 cm. Completed in 1899 to coincide with the centenary of Suvorov's Alpine campaign, the painting commemorates one of the most famous episodes of Russian military history. Although the Russian army successfully navigated much of the difficult Alpine terrain, the campaign involved severe hardships and significant losses. Surikov's masterpiece remains an important example of 19th-century Russian historical painting, combining military history with a dramatic portrayal of the struggle between humanity and the forces of nature.
